COACHING PHILOSOPHY
Dive deeper. Your most authentic self will not be found at the surface.
Exerpt from The Summer Day

I do know how to pay attention, how to fall down
into the grass, how to kneel down in the grass,
how to be idle and blessed, how to stroll through the fields,
which is what I have been doing all day.
Tell me, what else should I have done?
Doesn't everything die at last, and too soon?
Tell me, what is it you plan to do
with your one wild and precious life?

Broke & Happy or Rich & Miserable.
It doesn't have to be like this.
It would seem we have a choice in life: You can "do what you love" and be happy, but broke... or you can make a decent living and be miserable at a desk. But, it doesn't have to be like this.

When we think about a "happy" life, we are often thinking about the summation of two major categories of life and whether or not we have been successful in them: our Career & our Love Life. Typically, this is even more pronounced for women. I'm delighted to tell you that you need neither to be content and live a life full of joy. Do you need income? Yes. And companionship? Of course. But are those the total sum of a happy life? Absolutely not.
Happiness is a temporary emotion. (I know, so sorry, but it's true. We cannot build a "happy" life.) In reality, we are seeking contentment and satisfaction.
As I write this, I am recently divorced after a five-year marriage and I'm reorganizing my finances and working on reprioritizing my sources of income... It's always a puzzle to be made whole. And you know what? I am completely satisfied with my life and content with the choices I've made to get here. Did I experience all the emotions in the divorce? Of course. I did not, however, feel regret and I did not view the divorce as my failure. We can learn from hardship without punishing ourselves for it. Perspective is key.
I was fortunate enough to start therapy at the young age of 16 (and have had the privilege of continuing therapy for almost two decades). I have used my time in therapy to get at the heart of my priorities in life and the values I honor. I also attended two Learning as Leadership sessions, which helped me identify the driving forces and core memories that have made me who I am today. As it turns out, my goals in life do not include climbing corporate ladders and getting married (again). Seeking a a traditional career and love life have actually brought me a great deal of discontentment because at my core they are not my heartfelt priorities -- in turn, society taught me that those "should" be my priorities.
What are your heartfelt priorities? Can you list your most important values?
Don't spend your life chasing things that aren't important to you. As your contentment coach, I will impart pockets of wisdom I've gained from this journey and help you identify your priorities to achieve your own satisfaction in life. Because in reality, you don't need to keep chasing happiness — you simply need contentment.
